What is electrical cabling?

Cables are made up of a bundle of electrical wires that are encompassed together in an outer sheath. The insulated wires can be twisted or bonded together and are made of copper or aluminum to create a good conductor.

Electrical cables usually consist of the wiring, insulation, and an outer jacket to protect the whole unit. The purpose of a cable is to move electrical energy from one point to another, so insulation is important for safety reasons due to the live current running through.

PVC, rubber or plastic materials are normally used for the insulation because of their resistance and the outer jacket is usually made from polyethylene or a thermoplastic material. Such materials are considered to be of excellent quality due to their flexibility and high performance in a variety of environments.

Cables also have a voltage rating which is based on the thickness of insulation and types of wire. High-voltage cables will typically have thicker insulation than those used for low-voltage applications.

Types of cable and their uses

Cables are found in almost every setting, from the home right through to commercial and industrial applications. Wherever there is a need for an electrical current, cabling is usually required.

There are many different types of cable and the right one will depend on the usage and the voltage needed to be transferred. Essentially, the main types include electrical, power and computer cables. Within these categories, cabling can be labelled as the following:

  • Coaxial - This type of cable is mainly used for transferring data signals such as from an aerial or satellite to a TV. They contain high levels of insulation, making them ideal for conducting video frequencies, but they can also be used across computer applications.
  • Fiber-optic - Pulses of light are used to transfer information along fiber-optic cables, which consist of plastic or glass piping. Uses include internet, telecommunications and networking as this type of electrical cable allows high speed and increased reliability.
  • Flat cables - These types of electronic cables offer the flexibility of less weight and space, making them ideal for more compact applications. Also known as ribbon cables, they're often used in internal systems inside computers due to their versatility within smaller environments.
  • Composite or AV cables - Audiovisual cables are used to get the best results from video or sound equipment and include HDMI, ethernet, network, and data transfer cables. Home automation systems will typically require the use of composite cables. Specific types are also available within this category including coaxial and fiber-optic, depending on the required application.
  • Power and controls cables - Industrial settings often involve higher-voltage applications that require increased power electronic cables. Typical environments include buildings, where management systems are in place, and in workplaces where large machinery is commonplace.

Most types of cabling can overlap into other categories and the exact type that you require will depend on a variety of factors. Our large range covers the majority of applications but, if you need any help choosing the right cable for needs, contact our technical team who will be happy to answer any questions.
